I have a Master’s in Information Science, and a B.A. in English. I also have a Master Beekeeper Certification from Cornell’s agricultural extension. Guess which one I’m most proud of?

Librarian Avengers started in 1997

Librarian Avengers started in 1997. In Internet time, that’s about 50 years ago. I was a young English Major when I wrote an essay called Why you should fall to your knees and worship a librarian and hooked it up to the domain name I got for my birthday. The positive response from the library community was one of the forces that propelled me into graduate school.

I blogged grad school, where I stole free food from SIG-CHI meetings, studied Human-computer Interaction, and joined the Community Information Corps. I wrote long boring papers, taught classes, learned some web-devery, and worked as a researcher/professorial indentured servant.

The name Librarian Avengers was adapted from the Lesbian Avengers, a group of activists whose hellraising I admire. I learned about them as an undergrad working in the Michigan State University American Radicalism collection.

I owe that library many great things, including my love of comics, my first Cutter table, several Professional Heroes, and the chance to hold a first edition copy of The House on Pooh Corner.

*Saying “I am a librarian” is like saying “Please, remove $80,000 from my paycheck” so let’s keep the librarian thing between you and me. Seriously. This profession is rough.

Many people think of librarians as diminutive civil servants, scuttling about “Sssh-ing” people and stamping things. Well, think again buster.

Librarians have degrees. They go to graduate school for Information Science and become masters of data systems and human/computer interaction. Librarians can catalog anything from an onion to a dog’s ear. They could catalog you.

Librarians wield unfathomable power. With a flip of the wrist they can hide your dissertation behind piles of old Field and Stream magazines. They can find data for your term paper that you never knew existed. They may even point you toward new and appropriate subject headings.

People become librarians because they know too much. Their knowledge extends beyond mere categories. They cannot be confined to disciplines. Librarians are all-knowing and all-seeing. They bring order to chaos. They bring wisdom and culture to the masses. They preserve every aspect of human knowledge. Librarians rule. And they will kick the crap out of anyone who says otherwise.

This is the same comic con, coincidentally where my friend and coworker Jon, author of the excellent DogBlog, ran into <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/search?ie=UTF8&keywords=Joss%20Whedon&tag=librarianaven-20&index=apparel-index&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=9325" search?ie="UTF8&keywords=Joss%20Whedon&tag=librarianaven-20&index=apparel-index&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=9325"" width="1" height="1" border="0" style="border: medium none ! important; margin: 0px ! important">Joss Whedon while both gentlemen were drunk and thanked him thanked him thanked him for making such excellent movies.

Jon has a photo to prove it, which he will show you at the slightest provocation. Walk quietly around him and don’t make any sudden moves.

Oh? And as they point out, there’s already a word for a male librarian. It’s Librarian. Or Guybrarian, if you buy into my pathetic merchandising attempts.

If you know some librarians that you want to get gifts, I sell some cool t-shirts and mugs here.

Here are some of my favorite posts.

Here’s a quick summary of this website:
I’m Erica Olsen. I am a librarian (religion) and interface designer (profession). I just moved to San Francisco two weeks ago. I work doing User Experience at Second Life. I’ve been blogging since 1998, but in those days of yore we just called it “having a web page.”

If you wanna write to me and say hi, I’m ericaolsen (AT) gmail (DOT) com.
